Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) changed the landscape of modern anime with its brutal world, mysteries, political intrigue, and high-octane action. If you're missing the Survey Corps and the thrill of battling impossible odds, check out these similar series.
1. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Made by the same studio (Wit Studio) and team behind AoT's early seasons. Instead of Titans, humanity fights "Kabane" (zombies with steel hearts) from armored steam trains. The aesthetic and action are incredibly similar.
2. Vinland Saga
Also produced by Wit Studio (Season 1) and MAPPA (Season 2). It swaps Titans for Vikings but keeps the themes of war, revenge, and character growth. It's an epic historical drama with incredible animation.
3. 86 (Eighty-Six)
Deals with war, discrimination, and a group of young soldiers piloting machines in a battle they are doomed to lose. The emotional stakes and political commentary strike a chord very similar to AoT.
4. Tokyo Ghoul
Dark fantasy where humanity is prey. Kaneki Ken's transformation and the blurring lines between monster and human mirror Eren Yeager's journey. (Read about Anime Like Tokyo Ghoul here).
5. Claymore
Often called "The Witcher meets Attack on Titan." Female warriors fight monsters called Yoma. It's dark, gritty, and full of intense sword fights.
6. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
If you liked the military aspect, the conspiracy uncovering, and the deep world-building of AoT, FMA: Brotherhood is the gold standard.
7. Parasyte: The Maxim
High tension, body horror, and a protagonist who changes drastically to survive against a superior species.
Key Elements of AoT We Love
- High Stakes: Characters can die at any moment.
- Mystery: The world is not what it seems.
- Moral Greyness: No clear good vs. evil later on.
